Wind Farms in Taiwan Strait

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has been selected to take a major role in the build-out of offshore wind in the Taiwan Strait.

At the Taiwanese Bureau of Energy’s selection process for allocation of a total capacity of 3.5 GW by the end of April 2018, CIP was allocated three projects all located off the Changhua coast in the Taiwan Strait.

The three projects are 600 MW for the projects Changfang and Xidao located 13-15 km off the coast, as well as 300 MW for Site 29 (Chongneng), which will be developed with the Taiwanese partner China Steel Corporation and the Japanese developer Diamond Generating Asia (DGA). Further development of the three projects, will be undertaken by CIP in collaboration with local partner Taiwan Generations Corporation (TGC).

At the selection process, a large number of developers applied for more than 10 GW of the 3.5 GW of available grid. The main companies, awarded significant offshore capacity, are:

  • CIP (900 MW including 300 MW with partners)
  • The German wind project developer Wpd AG, which is already operating 16 minor onshore wind farms in Taiwan, (1073 MW)
  • Ørsted (900 MW)
  • Canada-based Northland Power Inc (300 MW)
  • Yushan Energy Pte Ltd of Singapore (300 MW).

The investment will be carried out by CIP via the fund CI III, in which PensionDanmark is the largest investor.
